Peoples’ tastes change over time. At least I could agree with pretty much every recommendation this time around - even if the Transporter was a meme choice, it’s still valid.

30 Is still young!
That being said, I’m in my last year of my 30s....my car budget went to the house and kids....

Lol! My wife’s 49 and drives a FOST.
I guess we're Young at heart or juvenile still.

As a 40 year-old owner of a FieSTa, I would *NOT* be looking to get rid of it if I didn’t have to drive 6 1/2 miles on rutted, washboard- y dirt roads to get to pavement. Even then, I might have just gotten the M-Sport gravel rally suspension package, except that in the spring the mud can be >6 inches deep :/ Also, Mrs. BoostAddict hates riding in it on the dirt... I can’t say I blame her, it’s a loud, bashy, and sometimes cringe-inducing experience :(

The suggestions are actually pretty reasonable now that you mention it. I expected more turbo Subaru.

I’m in my second to last year of my thirties and I’m totally down for a hot hatch.
![]() 11/01/2018 at 12:22 |

Needs change. I need more space with two kids. Hot hatch ain’t going to cut it. Another caveat, that I don’t buy into, is perception . At my job as you grow in ranks it would be perceived childish. It’s stupid, but if you want to get more money you play buy the dumb rules.

I mean, in plenty of other parts of the world, people use cars that size or even smaller as family cars - the whole point of the Mk1 Golf GTI was that it was possible to use as a family car, yet fun too...

I’d hazard the reason that why all of them are fine is because Torch didn’t make a suggestion this time around.

I have two big (70+ lb) dogs that I frequently drive around. I usually just fold the back seats down in my MS3, which works perfectly. I’d like something that either has fold-flat seats with a pass-thru trunk or is a hatch/wagon so I can do the same. I also drive to the mountain a lot, and much prefer a larger car over a sedan.
Since I live in the Pacific Northwest and visit the mountains a lot, all-wheel-drive is a must. As for budget I can go up to $40,000.
It’s every stereotype lumped together so good.
Get a loaded Outback... $40k goes POOF

My mother’s husband (I don’t call him “ step dad” because they didn’t get married until well after I was an independent adult) is 74, and drives a FOST. She used to drive a B5 Audi S4 until a spinal fusion surgery at 68 made it too painful for her to drive manual.

Hot hatches are timeless and I refuse to comform to societal norms when it comes to cars . However there is a spectrum inside the category and people’s tastes change with age. In my 30s now I am more intrigued by the GolfR. 10 years back I would have thought the Civic Type R was hot shit but now I hate the looks. I am sure there are many 40 year olds with cars eho still daily a a focus RS or an STi( not a hatch anymore but competition)

I don’t think you should age out of those things, but I do think if you are using the car to drive people for work, you may get judged a little bit. That said, as long as you aren’t driving something with a silly huge wing, extreme stance, or loud aftermarket exhaust , I think you’re fine. Most people won’t know the difference, and those who do will probably think it is cool. Your average person seeing a MS3 isn’t going to think “ ha! look at that boy racer” they are going to think “yep, that sure is a Japanese economy car” or maybe “wow I didn’t realize that modern cars could still rust like that ”.

I still want to build a Protege5 into my dream vehicle: A RWD, V8, 300ish hp, manual, lightweight
mini-wagon.
It’s a near impossible dream... and the Protege5 isn’t a fun vehicle to work on... but still.

For some it’s more to do with the harshness of the ride of some hot hatches, they just want a bit more comfort.
My previous car was a 1.4TSi 123bhp Skoda Superb Mk2 estate.
She didn’ t want for power, super comfy seats, masses of interior space.
Of course, now I’m 39, I’d like something a bit sportier, like a Vauxhall Corsa VXR.
![]() 11/01/2018 at 12:45 |

Yeah, pretty much the same here. I just like being comfortable.
![]() 11/01/2018 at 12:50 |

I’m pretty sure I’d have a Skoda if they were offered here.
My Forester will have to be close enough.
![]() 11/01/2018 at 12:52 |

I’m fairly uncoordinated so a I’m not killing apexes or whatever. Comfort is definitely one of the most critical features for my car to have.

![]() 11/01/2018 at 13:00 |

Rav4. if 30 is too old for a hot hatch he deserves something beige. I was going to say corolla, but i’m giving him a little ground clearance for the construction site.

They made awd Protege5 in other markets so rwd wouldn’t be so crazy
![]() 11/01/2018 at 13:01 |

I didn’t buy my hot hatch until I was in my 40s. I bought it because it is fast, fun, and has enough room for my wife and kids. I guess if your car has to be the “big” car, a hot hatch doesn’t work. But in my house, my wife had the SUV, so we didn’t need a second big car.

I got married, had a kid, and my cars got crazier and noisier than ever.
Part of it is that I have the luxury of choice (more than I deserve) , the other half is the willpower to keep the hobby alive.
If you want it badly enough, you can find a way to get it. There are fun cars at any price point. To be honest, the Speed3 is not really that noisy or boy-racer, but I understand that he wanted a newer car. Hot hatches are just fine, probably, except the CTR.
![]() 11/01/2018 at 13:45 |

Different choices, I’d argue, not so much different needs. (OK, so some ethnicities tend to be shorter and therefore fit into smaller cars than others, but plenty of Europeans can fit two adults and two kids into what we in America consider a compact car, no problem.)

If you’ve ever lived outside the country you’d know the needs differ wildly per country. In europe I needed a small car, in asia I needed a scooter. All depends what your surroundings are.
![]() 11/01/2018 at 14:50 |

Not sure if they were sold in America, but they sure do exist. Plus, to go full Jalop dickhead , that person does not need AWD, they need decent winter tires.

Hmm. I’m 30 and want to trade my not even that hot hot-hatch for a sports car. Does that mean I’ve gone straight to mid-life crisis?
![]() 11/01/2018 at 15:10 |

Yup. Sorry to be the one to have to inform you.
![]() 11/01/2018 at 15:11 |

I am getting to 30 and want a TVR and a w agon... Cause fast wagon > hatch
![]() 11/01/2018 at 15:21 |

I bought my hot hatch because I have two kids I had to drive around and they no longer fit in the back seat of my truck. As for perceptions, screw it! My boss and coworkers know me as an enthusiast who takes his fast car to the track. They still ask me to drive when we have site visits or client meetings.

At 24 I realized I was too old for my straight piped FiST, but I replaced it with a GTI, so... I guess that is of no help. It’s slightly more grown up, but it has launch mode...

My parents had a mk2 Golf (3-door) when I grew up as a teen . 2 adults, 2 teens . All (including my mom) at least 6 feet tall. There was plenty of room, only on multi week holiday trips the trunk was a bit small. I don’t believe they ever even considered a larger car, as there was no need.
![]() 11/05/2018 at 21:30 |

He’s only 74? Why did I think he was 85? Probably because other than the FOST, he is. Your poor Mom, though. Ma Jawz was the genetic source of Jawzx2's Need for Speed.

My dad would have kept driving fast cars forever, but having two kids cut into the budget, and it never bounced back when he realized that Horsepower+Handling+Kid prone to carsickness (me) = Regrettably-scented car with no resale value . Ask me to tell you the story of the trip to Maine in a ‘95 Escort Hatch sometime.
